ABOUT

About this spot

The "Okama," a symbol of the Zao mountain range, is a crater lake about 1 km in circumference formed by a volcanic eruption. Its emerald green water surrounded by rugged crater walls changes color depending on the angle of sunlight, which is why it is also called "Goshikinuma" (Five-Color Pond), and its biggest charm is that it shows a different face every time you visit. Located at an elevation of about 1,670 m, it has refreshing breezes even in summer, ideal for refreshing away from the bustle of the city. Using the Zao Highline, you can reach the observation deck from the parking lot near the summit on foot in a few minutes, so you can easily see this superb view even without serious mountaineering gear. Trekking courses to nearby Mt. Karita and Mt. Kumano are also well kept, recommended for those who want to be active. Nearby Togatta Onsen is also popular, with plans to soak in a hot spring after enjoying the view. Because the road is closed during winter, this is a Tohoku masterpiece of natural beauty visible only during the limited period from spring to autumn, so be sure to experience it.
