ABOUT
About this spot
Izunuma, in northern Miyagi Prefecture, is known as one of Japan's leading wintering grounds for migratory birds and is registered under the Ramsar Convention as an internationally important wetland. Its greatest charm is its rich seasonal expressions throughout the year. [Summer Charm: Lotus Festival] From late July to late August, the vast lake surface is filled with pink lotus flowers. Riding a small sightseeing boat to view the large blooms up close is as beautiful as paradise, and it is also a very popular photo spot. [Winter Charm: Migratory Birds] In winter, tens of thousands of greater white-fronted geese and swans arrive from Siberia. The sight of the early-morning "take-off" and the evening "return to roost" in particular is spectacular. The sound of wings and calls of birds filling the sky is a moving experience that lets you feel the power of nature. Nearby is also the "Sanctuary Center," where you can learn about the natural environment and ecosystem in a fun way. It is a perfect place for those who want to forget daily bustle and refresh body and mind, whether strolling with a camera or quietly birdwatching. It is a healing spot recommended for family trips, solo travelers, and photography lovers.
