ABOUT
About this spot
Kinojo, built on Mt. Kijo (about 400 m in elevation) in Soja City, Okayama Prefecture, is a mysterious ancient mountain castle selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Castles. Because it is not recorded in historical works such as the Nihon Shoki, who built it and when remains a mystery to this day, but a tradition survives that it was the residence of the demon "Ura," the root of the Momotaro legend. The main highlights are the earthen ramparts and stone walls that continue for about 2.8 km around the mountain, and the grand restored "West Gate." A walking course along the castle walls is maintained, and on a clear day you can enjoy a great panorama from the Soja Plain all the way to the Seto Inland Sea. It is ideal for history lovers, for those who want to hike in search of views, and for solo travelers who want to quietly immerse themselves in the romance of history. If you view the models and materials at the visitor center before setting out, you will be amazed at the sophistication of the defensive technology of the time. Breathing the natural air, you can spend a special moment feeling the breath of the ancient past.
