ABOUT
About this spot
Bitchu Matsuyama Castle in Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture, is one of the "12 surviving original keeps" with a keep that has remained since the Edo period, and is designated a national Important Cultural Property. Located at the summit of Mt. Gagyu at 430 m elevation, it stands at the highest place in Japan among castles with a surviving original keep. On early mornings from autumn through winter, dense fog forms around the castle, making it appear to float in a sea of clouds, which has made it nationally famous as the "Castle in the Sky." To see this superb view, we recommend viewing from the "Bitchu Matsuyama Castle Observation Deck" at a slight distance. To reach the castle itself, you climb on foot for about 20 minutes through abundant nature from Fuigo Pass. After you finish climbing, the contrast between the heavy stone walls rising on sheer cliffs and the white keep is overwhelmingly powerful. In recent years the castle has also been in the news for the cat lord "Sanjuro," who lives in the castle and warmly welcomes visitors. With history exploration, hiking, and photography, it is an appealing spot enjoyed by everyone from adults to children.
