ABOUT
About this spot
The Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, a sightseeing spot representing Okayama Prefecture, is a historic area where the atmospheric Edo-period townscape is preserved. Along the Kurashiki River stand storehouses with white walls set off by namako-kabe, and a beautiful scene unfolds with the green of willows reflected on the water. The area is dotted with historic buildings, including the Ohara Museum of Art, Japan's first private museum of Western art, and Kurashiki Ivy Square, where ivy covers red-brick walls. Browsing stylish cafes in renovated old houses and shops selling local specialties such as Kurashiki canvas and masking tape is a major pleasure as well. Particularly recommended is the "Kurashiki River Boat Ride." Riding in a boat that recreates the old goods-transport vessels and viewing the townscape from a low vantage point is a special experience. At night, the illumination lights up, wrapping the town in a fantastical, calm atmosphere different from daytime. Whether a girls' trip with friends, a date, a family stroll, or a solo journey steeped in history, it is a spot where all generations can spend leisurely time.
