ABOUT
About this spot
Tsuyama Castle, the symbol of Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture, is a hirayama (hill-and-plain) castle built by Tadamasa, younger brother of Mori Ranmaru, who is famous from the Honnoji Incident. It is now maintained as "Kakuzan Park." All buildings were demolished under the Meiji-era abolition of castles, but the heavy stone walls that preserve its former look, piled in layer upon layer, have an awe-inspiring scale. Spring is particularly exquisite, and the sight of about 1,000 Somei Yoshino cherry trees blooming to fill the stone walls is known as one of western Japan's leading flower-viewing spots. In the evening illumination is also held, allowing you to enjoy enchanting night cherry blossoms. In 2005, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the castle's construction, the "Bitchu Yagura" was restored, and you can tour the tatami-floored palace-style building all the way inside. It is a famous spot we especially hope history fans will visit, along with those who want to stroll in the calm atmosphere unique to a castle town and those who want to enjoy seasonal scenery with family and friends. Easy to reach within walking distance of the station, you can enjoy a full day together with a stroll around the surrounding castle town.
