ABOUT
About this spot
Awara Onsen in Awara, Fukui Prefecture, is a venerable hot spring resort, also known as the "inner parlor of Kansai," that has been loved by many literary figures and celebrities since the springs opened in 1883. The resort's greatest distinction is that many of its inns own their own source. With as many as 74 sources, each facility offers subtly different water quality and bathing feel, so the real pleasure is hopping between baths to find your favorite. In the center of the hot spring town, "Awara Onsen Yu-no-Machi Hiroba" is home to the "Ashi-yu" foot bath. The cypress building, inspired by Taisho-era romance, is stunning, and at night it is lit up and wrapped in a dreamlike atmosphere. Nearby, "Awara Onsen Yatai-mura Yukemuri Yokocho" has an appealing retro Showa-era feel, where you can enjoy dishes made with fresh local ingredients and local sake, along with warm exchanges with locals and fellow travelers. It is a healing spot recommended for everyone who wants to refresh body and mind, whether on a weekend family trip, a girls' getaway, or a solo trip as a reward for yourself.
