ABOUT
About this spot
Tojinbo, a signature scenic spot of Fukui Prefecture, is a line of sheer cliffs of giant columnar-joint rocks carved by the rough waves of the Sea of Japan. Columnar joints on this scale are said to exist in only three places in the world, and this is also a very valuable geological heritage designated a National Natural Monument. The top highlight is the cliff called "Ōkabe" (Great Wall), more than 20 meters high. Many places have no fences, so you can walk to the edge of the cliff and enjoy the thrilling experience of feeling the precipice and rough waves at your feet. The "sightseeing cruise boat" that views the whole cliff from the sea is also popular, letting you see unique rock formations such as Lion Rock and Candle Rock up close. The nearby shopping street is filled with the scent of the sea and good food such as fresh crab, grilled squid, and seafood bowls, making street food a pleasure for friends and families. At dusk, you may see the setting sun over the Sea of Japan dye the rock surface golden, a fantastical sight that makes this a great date spot too.
