Kumagawa-juku

Kumagawa-juku prospered as a post town on the "Saba Kaido" (Mackerel Road) linking Wakasa and Kyoto. Its atmospheric streetscape of the Kumagawa checkpoint, castle ruins, and storehouse-style townhouses is designated a Nationally Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.

ABOUT

About this spot

Kumagawa-juku in Wakasa Town, Fukui Prefecture, flourished as the most important post town of the "Saba Kaido" (Mackerel Road), which carried Wakasa's seafood to Kyoto. It still strongly retains the look of the past, with townhouses with beautiful tiled roofs and the clear water of the Maegawa stream running along the old road, giving you the feeling of time-traveling to the Edo period just by walking. Between strolls, we recommend enjoying sweets made with the local specialty "kuzu" (arrowroot) at cafes converted from old houses, or learning history at the museum. The adjacent "Michi-no-Eki Wakasa Kumagawa-juku" also has a good selection of local specialties and souvenirs. It is a perfect spot for history lovers, for those who want to forget the urban bustle and spend quiet time, and for those who want to take atmospheric photos with family and friends. Please enjoy a moment full of Japanese charm along with the scenery of the four seasons.
