ABOUT

About this spot

Nestled deep in the mountains of Fukui Prefecture, Eihei-ji Temple is the primary training monastery of the Soto school of Zen, founded in 1244 by Zen Master Dogen. Many trainee monks still devote themselves to strict daily practice, and the moment you step inside, you are enveloped in a dignified air that makes you straighten your back. The vast grounds are lined with buildings known as the "Shichido Garan" (Seven Hall Complex), the foundation of training. They are connected by corridors, so you can tour them quietly even on rainy or snowy days. Do not miss the ceiling paintings of "Sanshokaku," where 230 paintings of flowers and birds cover the ceiling with a beauty that leaves you speechless. The temple shows rich expressions through the seasons, offering a different kind of wonder whenever you visit: fresh greenery in spring, deep green in summer, vivid autumn leaves, and serene snowy scenery in winter. The approach walking through the cedar grove is an ideal detox spot that lets you forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is ideal for a trip alone to quietly reflect on yourself, or for a trip with friends to experience traditional Japanese culture. After your visit, enjoying the local specialties "Eiheiji soba" and "sesame tofu" in the temple town is another pleasure. Visit on a weekend when you want to refresh both body and mind.
