ABOUT

About this spot

Sotomo, on the Uchitomi Peninsula in Obama, Fukui Prefecture, is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty and one of Wakasa Bay's finest scenic spots. Along about 6 km of coastline, sheer cliffs, strange rock formations, and sea caves carved by the rough waves of the Sea of Japan dot the shore, a landscape that is truly nature's own work of art. Especially striking are Omon and Komon (the Great Gate and Little Gate), enormous openings worn through the rock by wave erosion. To enjoy this spectacular scenery, we recommend the Sotomo sightseeing cruise departing from Wakasa Fisherman's Wharf. During the roughly 60-minute cruise, you can see up close the contrast between the emerald-green sea and the white granite. The panoramic views taken in with the sea breeze feel wonderfully open, ideal for family trips, trips with friends, or when you want to refresh yourself alone. After disembarking, enjoying fresh Wakasa seafood at the nearby market is another highlight of the trip. Because sailings may be canceled or routes changed depending on sea conditions, we recommend visiting in the calmer season from spring to summer. An experience that soothes the heart with the power and beauty of nature awaits.
