ABOUT

About this spot

Maruoka Castle, a symbol of Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, was built in 1576 (Tensho 4) in the Warring States period by Shibata Katsutoyo and has one of the oldest surviving keeps in Japan. Designated an Important Cultural Property, it is known as a precious relic, the only one in the Hokuriku region that conveys its appearance from that time. Step inside the castle and you will find thick beams and pillars that strongly retain the architectural style of the time, and staircases so steep they are even called "the steepest in Japan." Climbing while using the rope that serves as a handrail brings a thrill and the weight of history, as if you had become a samurai of the Warring States period. Maruoka Castle has also been selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, and in spring the castle rising amid cherry trees in full bloom is so fantastical that it is also called "Kasumigajo" (Mist Castle). At night, projection mapping using the latest technology is sometimes held, offering entertainment that fuses history and the modern era. It is perfect not only for history fans but also for strolls with family or a partner and quiet moments on a solo trip. From the top floor of the keep you can see the Sakai Plain and feel Fukui's rich nature.
