ABOUT
About this spot
Echizen Washi no Sato in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, is a sacred home of washi paper with one of the longest histories in Japan. Traditional houses line the area, where artisans still make washi of the highest quality today. A highlight is Papyrus-kan, where you can try authentic papermaking in about 20 to 40 minutes. Arranging your favorite flowers or adding color, you can make a one-of-a-kind postcard or shikishi board. At Udatsu no Kogeikan, a building relocated from the mid-Edo period, you can watch up close as artisans demonstrate the nagashi-zuki technique with traditional tools, and the movement of their hands is breathtaking. Stroll the streets where beautiful water channels flow, and you may come across plants used as raw materials for washi being dried. It is a perfect place for a girls' trip browsing for crafts, for making family memories, or for a quiet solo trip steeped in history. The beautiful washi products you can find only here also make wonderful souvenirs. Why not experience a luxurious time of handcraft in a town where history and tradition live on?
