ABOUT
About this spot
Hachimantai is a national park centered on a summit at 1,613 m, counted among the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan. It is characterized by the gentle terrain typical of a volcanic plateau, and a big attraction is that even beginners can easily enjoy trekking. Spring highlights include the huge "Snow Corridor" that appears when the road opens in mid-April, and the mysterious "Dragon Eye" seen at Kagami-numa pond from late May to early June. The way the melting snow looks like a dragon's eye is truly art created by nature. In summer alpine flowers bloom, and in autumn the whole mountain turns blazing red and yellow, coloring the drive on the Aspite Line. After your walk, head to the hot spring areas scattered around. Famous baths with a secluded feel, such as the high-altitude "Toshichi Onsen" and "Matsukawa Onsen," home to Japan's first geothermal power plant, will soothe your fatigue. It is a leading Iwate sightseeing spot, ideal for family trips and girls' trips as well as for solo travelers who want to face nature quietly.
