ABOUT

About this spot

Genbikei is one of Japan's representative scenic spots, in Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture. Rugged rock formations, deep pools and waterfalls created by the Iwai River eroding huge rocks over a long period continue for about 2 km, showing beautiful faces in every season. The top highlight, above all, is "Kakko Dango," known as the "flying dumplings." You place an order with the shop across the gorge, and a basket slides down along a wire, a unique style that both adults and children enjoy. Eating the famous dumplings while listening to the murmur of the river is a special time. There is something new to discover whenever you visit: cherry blossoms in full bloom in spring, cool water and deep green in summer, blazing foliage in autumn, and ink-painting-like snowy scenery in winter. With well-maintained walking paths, it is ideal for hiking with family, dates with someone special, and soul-searching solo trips. It is close to Ichinoseki IC and easy to reach, so be sure to stop by when sightseeing in Iwate.
