ABOUT
About this spot
Geibikei Gorge, in Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture, is a fantastical gorge designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty, where cliffs over 50 m high continue for about 2 km along both banks of the Satetsu River. The greatest attraction here is the "boat ride" skillfully steered by a boatman with a single pole. During the relaxing round-trip boat trip of about 90 minutes, you can enjoy the changing faces of the seasons. In spring there are vivid wisteria flowers, in summer dazzling deep green, in autumn blazing foliage, and in winter you can view an ink-painting-like snowy landscape from a warm "kotatsu boat," so there is something new to discover in any season. At the turnaround point, "Miyoshigaoka," you disembark once and try "Untama-nage," throwing a lucky ball into a rock hole on the opposite bank. It is said that if it goes in, your wish will come true. On the return trip, the boatman's "Geibi Oiwake" echoing through the gorge is one of the local specialties that soothes visitors' hearts. It is an Iwate sightseeing spot ideal for trips with family and friends as well as for those who want to feel nature quietly alone.
