ABOUT
About this spot
Morioka Castle was built as the residence of the lords of the Nanbu Domain, and its ruins are full of historic atmosphere. Today it is maintained as Morioka Castle Ruins Park (Iwate Park) and is also one of Japan's 100 Famous Castles. The main highlight is the stone walls, which retain much of their original character. Built entirely of stone, a rarity north of the Kanto region, these sturdy granite walls are strikingly imposing. Even if you are not a history buff, you will be moved by their beauty and the skill that went into them. The scenery is wonderful in every season. In spring, about 250 cherry trees bloom, making it one of the prefecture's top cherry blossom viewing spots; summer brings fresh greenery, autumn brings vivid foliage, and in winter you can see the stone walls dusted with snow. The park has well-maintained walking paths, ideal for a leisurely solo walk on a weekend or a stroll with family or friends as you soak up the history. Nearby, the Morioka History and Culture Museum lets you learn more about the city's past. It is a classic spot to visit first when sightseeing in Morioka.
