ABOUT

About this spot

The Kamaishi Daikannon, loved as a symbol of Kamaishi City in Iwate Prefecture, is a pure white 48.5-meter-tall Gyoran Kannon standing on a hill overlooking Kamaishi Bay. Its compassionate figure continues to watch over safety at sea and the peace of the people. The interior of the Kannon is divided into 13 floors, and you can climb a spiral staircase through each floor, where the Seven Lucky Gods are enshrined. The best part is the "Gyohai Observation Deck," located at the fish's back. From here you can enjoy the beautiful sculpted forms of the intricate ria coastline and the grand panorama of the endless Pacific Ocean, a scenery that touches visitors' hearts. It has also been certified as a "Sacred Place for Lovers," making it popular as a power spot for matchmaking. A calm cafe is also on the grounds, where you can spend a relaxing time feeling the Sanriku breeze. Please visit as a place to refresh alone, or as a drive spot with family and friends.
