ABOUT

About this spot

This ancient temple, representative of the Tohoku region, is said to have been founded in 850 (Kasho 3) by Jikaku Daishi Ennin of Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei. In the early 12th century, the first lord of the Oshu Fujiwara clan, Kiyohira, carried out the large-scale construction of halls and pagodas. His aim was to console the spirits of all those who had died in long years of war and to build a "peaceful ideal land" based on the teachings of Buddha. Its greatest attraction is the National Treasure Konjikido (Golden Hall), whose entire structure is covered in gold leaf. Inside, the lavish decoration, which gathers the best of the craftsmanship of the time, including mother-of-pearl inlay, maki-e lacquerwork, and ivory carving, overwhelms all who see it. Along "Tsukimizaka," the slope leading from the entrance, stand ancient cedar trees more than 300 years old, and you can enjoy a stroll in the silence while feeling the weight of history. The beautiful scenery of each season, such as cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage, is also a highlight. It is an ideal spot for those who wish to feel eternal history and the healing power of nature on a family trip or a solo journey.
