ABOUT
About this spot
The Marukan Building Grand Dining Hall in Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture, is known as a "miracle dining hall" that overcame the threat of closure and was revived thanks to the passionate requests of local citizens. The interior has the atmosphere of a Showa-era department store restaurant, a nostalgic yet lively space. The one thing you cannot miss here is the "10-tier soft serve," about 25 cm tall. Surprisingly, the local standard is to eat it with disposable chopsticks. The unique sight looks great on social media. The menu also offers nearly 100 Japanese, Western, and Chinese dishes, such as the hearty "Napolitan katsu" and the addictively spicy "Marukan Ramen," so even three generations of a family can each choose what they like. The views are another attraction, as the large windows give a sweeping look at Hanamaki's cityscape. It is a special place that warmly welcomes everyone, whether you are making memories with friends, on a nostalgic solo trip, or having lunch with kids.
