ABOUT

About this spot

Takeo Onsen, a leading hot spring resort in Saga Prefecture, has a history of more than 1,300 years and is said to have been enjoyed by Miyamoto Musashi and Siebold. The highlight is the vividly vermilion-lacquered "Romon" gate built in the Taisho era. Designed by Tatsuno Kingo, known for Tokyo Station, the gate employs traditional techniques without using a single nail and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. The water is a weakly alkaline simple spring that leaves skin feeling moist, and it is especially popular among women as a "beauty bath." There are three public bathhouses, "Motoyu," "Horaiyu," and "Sagi no Yu," each with its own character. Motoyu in particular is charming for its high ceilings and retro atmosphere that recall the Meiji era. Luxurious private baths are also available, such as the all-marble "Tonosama-yu" (Lord's Bath), said to have been used by the feudal lord of old, making this a good choice for those who want private time. Be sure to combine your visit with nearby popular spots such as Takeo City Library and Mifuneyama Rakuen, and enjoy a stroll through this historic hot spring town.
