Karatsu Castle

The symbol of Karatsu, built by Terasawa Hirotaka, a retainer of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Its graceful form jutting toward the sea earned it the nickname "Maizuru Castle" (Dancing Crane Castle), and the keep offers sweeping views of Niji-no-Matsubara and the Genkai Sea.

ABOUT

About this spot

Karatsu Castle, a landmark of Karatsu in Saga Prefecture, is a historic castle built over seven years from 1602 and completed in 1608. Its silhouette atop Mt. Mitsushima resembles a crane spreading its wings, earning it the elegant nickname "Maizuru Castle" (Dancing Crane Castle). The main highlight is the 360-degree panoramic view from the top floor of the keep. The contrast between the vast green of Niji no Matsubara, one of Japan's Three Great Pine Groves, and the calm blue of Karatsu Bay is truly breathtaking. Inside, the castle serves as a museum, where valuable materials of the Karatsu domain, armor and weapons, and Karatsu ware let you feel the depth of history firsthand. The seasons add rich color as well: in spring, cherry blossoms in full bloom adorn the castle walls, and in early summer, dreamy purple wisteria flowers bloom. At the foot of the castle, remnants of the old castle town make for pleasant strolling. Whether you come with family, with friends, or on your own to explore history, it is a classic Karatsu sightseeing spot that suits any style of travel.
