ABOUT
About this spot
Niji-no-Matsubara, spreading along the coast of Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, is one of Japan's Three Great Pine Groves, together with Miho-no-Matsubara in Shizuoka Prefecture and Kehi-no-Matsubara in Fukui Prefecture. It is said to have begun about 400 years ago when the lord of Karatsu planted the trees as a windbreak and tide barrier, and today about one million black pines grow over about 4.5 km in length and about 500 m in width. The prefectural road running through the pine forest is popular as an exhilarating drive course, as if racing through a green tunnel. The fantastical scenery with sunlight filtering through the leaves is also ideal as a photo spot. Walking paths are also maintained, and it is recommended for quiet solo walks feeling the sea breeze or family strolls. From the nearby Kagamiyama Observation Deck, you can see the entire arc of the pine grove and the blue Karatsu Bay, and its beauty is truly breathtaking. The area also has wagon sales of the local gourmet "Karatsu Burger," and enjoying one between strolls is part of the fun. Why not spend time forgetting everyday life in this healing space woven from history and nature?
