ABOUT
About this spot
The Yobuko Morning Market, in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, is a morning market also called one of Japan's three great morning markets. Along the roughly 200-meter Asaichi-dori street right by Yobuko Port, stalls selling local specialties line up from around 7:30 every morning. Its greatest appeal is, above all, the fresh seafood caught that very day. Yobuko's famous squid, of course, along with sea urchin, turban shells, and homemade dried fish, are available at surprisingly reasonable prices. Chatting with the spirited local women while choosing souvenirs is part of the real charm of the market. There is also plenty of street food, including seafood skewers grilled on the spot and piping-hot ikashumai (squid dumplings) that you should not miss. It is a perfect spot whether you are enjoying it with family and friends or strolling leisurely alone, soaking up the atmosphere of a port town. Many shops close around noon, so we recommend rising a little early to visit.
