ABOUT

About this spot

Facing the coastline of Genkai Town in Saga Prefecture, the Hamanoura Rice Terraces are a spectacular sight, with 283 paddies of various sizes layered across a steep slope. The terraces shine brightest during rice planting season, from mid-April to early May. The water-filled paddies reflect the sky like mirrors, and the sunset sinking toward the horizon bathes the whole scene in madder red, a sight that takes your breath away. Because of this beauty, the site has been certified as a "Sanctuary of Lovers," and an observation point has been set up along the national road. It is perfect for a date, slowly watching the sunset with someone special, or for a solo visit to quietly aim your camera at a magical shot. Feel the sea breeze and experience the original landscape of Japan, woven from the wisdom of our predecessors who used the natural terrain and the beautiful coastline. If you stroll the nearby walking paths, you can enjoy the rich natural scenery that changes with each season.
