ABOUT

About this spot

Kagamiyama Observatory, one of Saga Prefecture's signature scenic spots, sits on the summit of Mt. Kagami, 284 m above sea level and about 15 minutes by car from central Karatsu. Its greatest highlight is the magnificent "Niji no Matsubara" spreading out below. The contrast between the green of the pine trees stretching about 4.5 km and the blue waters of Karatsu Bay is breathtakingly beautiful. On a clear day you can enjoy a panoramic view all the way to Iki Island in the distance. The scenery changes with the seasons, too. In spring, the roughly 4 km mountain road leading to the observatory turns into a tunnel of cherry blossoms; in May, vivid azaleas bloom; in autumn there is fall foliage; and in winter, beautiful night views unfold in crystal-clear air. There is something new to discover whenever you visit. Near the summit there are a large parking lot, a park, and a shop, making it an ideal place for a family picnic, a drive with friends, or simply gazing at the view on your own. It is also known as the setting of the legend of Matsura Sayohime, a tragic love story from the Manyoshu, which adds a touch of historical charm. When you visit Karatsu, be sure to come and experience this overwhelming sense of openness.
