ABOUT

About this spot

Yutoku Inari Shrine, in Kashima City, Saga Prefecture, is a shrine with a distinguished history counted among Japan's three great Inari shrines, together with Fushimi Inari Taisha and Kasama Inari Shrine. Deeply revered as a guardian deity of clothing, food, and shelter, it welcomes about 3 million worshippers a year. The top highlight is the magnificent, richly colored architecture set against abundant greenery. The gorgeous shrine buildings, finished entirely in lacquer with rich colors, are also called the "Nikko of Chinzei" for their splendor. From the main hall, about 18 meters above the ground, you can see the town of Kashima and the distant Ariake Sea, enjoying liberating views. The grounds have an approach leading to the inner sanctuary, and walking through the fantastical scenery of a succession of vermilion torii gates, as if on a little hike, is also recommended. Cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring, foliage in autumn, and snowscapes in winter greet worshippers with the beauty of every season. From a girls' power spot tour to a family stroll and a solo trip for history lovers, it is a sightseeing spot where anyone can spend a soul-cleansing time. After worship, don't forget to try the famous "Inari yokan" at the shopping street in front of the gate.
