ABOUT
About this spot
Okawachiyama in Imari City, Saga Prefecture, is the site of the official kilns where the Saga domain (Nabeshima domain) once fired the finest quality porcelain as tribute to the shogun's family and various feudal lords. Surrounded on three sides by steep mountains, it was truly a "hidden land" meant to prevent the leakage of technology, and is still called the "village of secret kilns." Walking through the village, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery unique to a pottery town, such as brick chimneys, tonbai walls (walls built by reusing refractory bricks from kilns), and bridges set with ceramics. About 30 kilns still line the street, displaying wares that inherit tradition while incorporating modern sensibilities. The seasonal charm is wonderful too. At the "Wind Chime Festival" held in summer in particular, Imari-ware wind chimes hung at the eaves of each kiln ring out with clear tones through the mountains. It is the ideal place for a luxurious adult holiday, searching for a favorite piece while pondering history in a quiet mountain village.
