ABOUT
About this spot
Hizen Nagoya Castle Ruins are the remains of a huge castle that Toyotomi Hideyoshi built in the late Sengoku period as the base for his Korean campaign, second in scale at the time only to Osaka Castle. No buildings remain today, but the high-piled stone walls and camp sites strongly preserve its former appearance, and the site is designated a Special Historic Site by the national government. Walking the vast grounds, you can feel the weight of history. From the site of the keep platform you can see the beautiful Genkai Sea, and on a clear day the panorama extends all the way to Tsushima. The neighboring Saga Prefectural Nagoya Castle Museum displays reconstruction models of the castle and valuable materials on diplomacy of the time, and visiting together deepens your understanding of the history. A VR experience recreating the castle's interior of the time is also recommended. It is perfect for history lovers, as well as for solo trips and family walks in search of fine views.
