ABOUT

About this spot

Shasui Falls is a three-tier waterfall on the Takizawa River in Hirayama, Yamakita Town, Kanagawa. The first fall drops 69 meters, the second 16 meters and the third 29 meters. An Edo-period gazetteer lists it as the largest waterfall in old Sagami Province. In 1985 it was selected among Japan's 100 Famous Waters, and it is also one of the 100 Waterfalls of Japan. The name "Shasui" is an esoteric Buddhist word for water that purifies the body. The monk Mongaku is said to have undergone a hundred-day ascetic practice under the fall in the early Kamakura period. A festival is held every year on the fourth Sunday of July. The fall itself drops in three tiers. The trail was closed after repeated rockfalls in 2004 damaged its benches and steps, but it reopened on April 8, 2022. It is 118 meters long with 226 steps and a new viewing platform 40 meters above the ground. Wear comfortable shoes. A trail runs along the Takizawa River from Prefectural Route 726 to near the fall. Conditions can change because of rockfall, so check the latest notice from Yamakita Town before you go.
