ABOUT

About this spot

Odawara Castle was the base of the Hojo clan, who ruled the entire Kanto region in the Sengoku period, and was a famous castle that boasted of being "impregnable." Today it is maintained as a castle ruins park, and its beautiful main keep, reconstructed in 1960, is the symbol of Odawara. The inside of the keep is a history museum, where exhibits on the history of the Hojo clan, swords, and armor let you learn deeply about samurai culture of the past. From the top floor you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view over Sagami Bay, the Izu Peninsula, and the Hakone mountains. The beauty of the seasons is another attraction. In spring, about 300 Somei-Yoshino cherry trees, selected among Japan's 100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots, bloom, and in early summer hydrangeas and Japanese irises color the gardens. The park also has the "Odawara Castle NINJA Museum" and a "children's amusement park," so couples on dates, solo history walkers, and families alike can enjoy a full day here. Within walking distance of the station, it is also a spot well worth visiting as a gateway to Hakone sightseeing.
