ABOUT
About this spot
A landmark of Kamakura that draws visitors from around the world, Kotoku-in is home to the Great Buddha of Kamakura. This giant bronze statue stands about 11.3 meters tall and weighs roughly 121 tons, and is the only National Treasure (sculpture) in Kamakura. When first built, the Buddha was housed inside a huge hall, but the building was lost to tsunami and earthquakes, leaving the open-air style seen today. Seated serenely against the blue sky, the statue calms the heart of all who see it. Entering the Buddha's interior is also popular, offering a rare chance to see the casting techniques of the era from the inside. The contrast with cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall is beautiful. It is ideal for a solo trip soaking up history at a leisurely pace, or for strolling and taking photos with friends. Stylish cafes and famous spots such as Hase-dera Temple are nearby, making this an essential stop on any Kamakura sightseeing route. Why not spend a special moment here, where the weight of history and a sense of openness come together?
