ABOUT

About this spot

Yokohama Marine Tower stands beside Yamashita Park in Naka Ward, Yokohama, and rises 106 metres. Built as a project marking the 100th anniversary of the opening of Yokohama Port, it opened on 15 January 1961 and remains one of Yokohama's symbols. The tower body is decagonal and the observation deck has 20 sides. Its top once served as a lighthouse and was recorded by Guinness as the tallest lighthouse, though it was of limited importance to ships in the area; the lighthouse function was suspended in 2008 and abolished the same year. The tower closed at the end of 2006, reopened on 23 May 2009 after renovation, closed again from 2019 for further work, and reopened a second time on 1 September 2022. Its green-covered walls, created under the concept of connecting with the city and with people, blend with the greenery of Yamashita Park and its surroundings. The highlights are the observation floors on the 29th and 30th floors, about 94 metres up, with views of the port, Minato Mirai 21, the Yokohama Bay Bridge and the industrial night views of Honmoku Pier. The 30th floor is a media art gallery where you can enjoy video works together with the night view. The lower floors hold cafes, a bar, shops, restaurants and a wedding venue, and the 2nd floor has a travel library and community lounge. An official multilingual audio guide, "Yokohama 360°", is also available. The tower was certified as a "Lovers' Sanctuary" in 2010. Visit around dusk to enjoy both the daytime harbor view and the night view. Allow 30 to 60 minutes for the observation deck, or half a day with a stroll nearby. Hours and prices can change, and the tower sometimes closes for maintenance, so check the official website before you go. Nearby are Yamashita Park, Yokohama Chinatown, Hikawa Maru, Harbor View Park and the Yokohama Doll Museum. The nearest station is Motomachi-Chukagai on the Minatomirai Line, a convenient starting point for sightseeing in Yokohama.
