ABOUT
About this spot
Owakudani, a representative sightseeing spot of Hakone, is a volcanic explosion crater formed by an eruption about 3,000 years ago. White steam still rises from all over, and the desolate scenery filled with the distinctive smell of sulfur lets you feel the overwhelming energy of nature that once earned it the name "Jigokudani" (Hell Valley). The one thing you cannot miss here is the famous "kuro-tamago" (black eggs). They are boiled eggs whose shells turn black through a chemical reaction between geothermal heat and volcanic gas, and are said to extend your life by seven years if you eat one. Tasting a freshly made, warm black egg while enjoying the grand view is an exceptional experience. On clear days, it is also popular as a perfect photo spot with a view of Mount Fuji. Riding the Hakone Ropeway for an aerial stroll and looking down from directly above at the steam rising from the valley floor is a thrill found only here. With the "Hakone Geomuseum," where you can learn about volcanoes, and an observation restaurant, it is a highlight of Hakone sightseeing that satisfies any travel style, whether with family, friends, or solo.
