ABOUT

About this spot

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, enshrined in the center of Kamakura, was developed as the heart of the city when Minamoto no Yoritomo founded the Kamakura shogunate, and is a spiritual symbol of samurai culture. The "Dankazura" path continuing from the approach "Wakamiya Oji" becomes a magnificent tunnel of cherry blossoms in spring, gently welcoming worshippers. From the main shrine at the top of the steep stone stairs, you can see the whole of Kamakura stretching straight to Yuigahama, with a panoramic view on clear days. The grounds are full of spots that convey the breath of history, such as the "Maiden" where Shizuka Gozen is said to have danced longing for Yoshitsune, and the "Genpei Pond" where lotus flowers bloom in summer. Whether you visit seeking luck in competition and family safety, you will find beautiful scenery in every season, from autumn leaves to winter peonies. Komachi Street nearby, lined with souvenir shops, lets you enjoy a history walk and good food at the same time, making it a perfect place for a weekend trip with friends or family.
