ABOUT
About this spot
Surrounded by Hakone's deep mountains, Hatajuku is the birthplace of yosegi marquetry, a traditional craft that has continued since the Edo period. At the Hatajuku Yosegi Kaikan, which conveys its appeal in full, you can closely view the process by which intricate geometric patterns are made, and many fine pieces showing off the craftsmen's skill. The exhibit space displays a wide range of works, from historical pieces made in the Edo period to bold modern designs, and you will be struck by the richness of color that makes use of the warmth of wood. The 'yosegi coaster making experience,' in which you actually assemble pieces of wood, is hugely popular as an activity that absorbs everyone from children to adults. The time spent combining different-colored parts like a puzzle to make your own pattern will be a wonderful travel memory. Admission is free, and as an indoor facility it can be enjoyed even on rainy days. Between Hakone strolls, feel the depth of craftsmanship and the beauty of wood for yourself.
