ABOUT

About this spot

Kannonzaki Lighthouse in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, is a historic monument that was lit in the 2nd year of Meiji (1869) as Japan's first Western-style lighthouse. The current lighthouse is the third, rebuilt in the 14th year of Taisho, and its beautiful white form, standing out vividly against the blue sea and sky, captivates visitors. The main highlight is the superb view from the observation deck at the top of the interior spiral staircase. You can see the Uraga Channel, the entrance to Tokyo Bay, and the powerful sight unique to Yokosuka of large tankers and luxury cruise ships passing right before your eyes. On a clear day you can clearly see across to the Boso Peninsula in Chiba, with a superb feeling of openness. The surrounding area is developed as the vast Kannonzaki Park (a prefectural park), where walking paths let you encounter rich nature and historic battery ruins. It is recommended for any occasion: an active holiday with family, a photogenic girls' trip with friends, or a relaxed solo trip in the sea breeze. Be sure to experience the weight of history and the refreshing sea panorama in person.
