Mount Tsurugi

Mount Tsurugi is the highest peak in Tokushima Prefecture and the second highest in western Japan. A climbing lift takes you easily to around 1,700 m, so even beginners and families can enjoy 360-degree panoramic views. It is also famous as a power spot with mystical legends.

ABOUT

About this spot

Known as the "roof of Shikoku," Mount Tsurugi stands at 1,955 m. Although it is one of western Japan's highest peaks, with the climbing lift you can reach the summit in under an hour of walking, making it popular as one of Japan's "easiest-to-climb 100 Famous Mountains." A well-maintained trail runs from Nishijima Station, the lift's terminus, to the summit, attracting a wide range of people from beginners and families with small children to adults who want serious trekking. Near the summit, a gentle grassland covered with miyako-zasa bamboo grass spreads out, and from the observation deck awaits a stunning view stretching to the Ishizuchi mountains, the Seto Inland Sea, and the Kii Peninsula. It is also known as a treasure trove of rare alpine plants such as Kirengeshoma, and in autumn the whole mountain is wrapped in blazing foliage. It has long been an object of mountain worship and has a mysterious side, including the legend of King Solomon's treasure. It is a soul-cleansing power spot ideal for a solo refreshing climb, a girls' trip with friends, or a weekend outdoor outing.
