ABOUT
About this spot
Ryozenji Temple in Naruto, Tokushima Prefecture, is the memorable "Temple No. 1" of the 88-Temple Shikoku Pilgrimage. It is said to have been founded by the priest Gyoki at the imperial request of Emperor Shomu during the Tenpyo era (729-749), and it later became a sacred site where Kobo Daishi (Kukai) trained in the 6th year of Konin (815). Today it still welcomes many pilgrims and visitors. As you enter the grounds, a stately main gate greets you first. Beyond it stand beautifully tended gardens, a Tahoto pagoda, and the main hall enshrining the principal image of Shaka Nyorai, all wrapped in a dignified atmosphere. Since this is the starting point of the pilgrimage, the shop on the grounds sells everything a pilgrim needs, including white pilgrim's clothing, the kongo-zue staff, and the stamp book. It is ideal not only for those taking on the pilgrimage, but also for anyone who wants to stroll quietly while enjoying historic architecture and the changing seasons. In recent years it has also gained popularity as a power spot for praying for safe travels. Whether you want time alone to reflect or to reflect on history with friends and family, this is one of Tokushima's signature sights.
