ABOUT

About this spot

Awa Jurobei Yashiki is a tourist facility where you can watch "Awa Ningyo Joruri," Tokushima's pride and a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, every day. The site is the former residence of Bando Jurobei, the model for the story "Keisei Awa no Naruto," so you can feel the setting of the work itself. Every day inside the hall, you can enjoy a powerful performance with the narrator's chanting, the shamisen, and the "three-person manipulation" technique in which three people operate a single puppet. In particular, the "Junrei-uta no Dan" scene depicting the parting of mother and child is so full of emotion that even first-time viewers may be moved to tears. The exhibition corner lets you see expressive puppet heads and costumes up close and learn how the puppets are operated. There is also a hands-on corner where you can actually move a puppet, making it enjoyable for adults and children alike. It is also an ideal spot for a relaxed adult holiday or school trip for those who want to experience Tokushima's deep history and traditional culture.
