ABOUT

About this spot

The Naruto Strait lies between Tokushima Prefecture and Awaji Island. The "Naruto whirlpools" that occur here are known as among the world's largest, created by the rise and fall of the tides. During the spring and autumn "spring tides," giant whirlpools up to 20 m in diameter sometimes appear, and the power produced by this natural energy is truly breathtaking. There are two main ways to enjoy them. The first is walking "Uzu no Michi," an over-sea walkway built inside the girder of the Ohnaruto Bridge. From the glass floor 45 m above the sea, you get a thrilling experience of looking straight down on the swirling water. Windows with panoramic views let you take in the Seto Inland Sea and the Kii Channel, making it a popular photo spot. The second is getting close to the whirlpools on a sightseeing boat. Observing the roaring, swirling water up close is the real thrill of a boat, and you can enjoy the art created by nature near you while feeling the spray. The area also has cafes serving sweets made with Naruto Kintoki sweet potatoes and shops serving fresh seafood bowls, making it ideal for drives with friends, family trips, or solo trips to feel nature's power. To enjoy the greatest impression, the key is to check the tide table in advance for the "best viewing times."
