ABOUT

About this spot

Yakuoji Temple, standing in Minami Town in southern Tokushima Prefecture, is Temple No. 23 of the 88-Temple Shikoku Pilgrimage and has long drawn deep devotion from across Japan as the "Yakuoji of warding off misfortune." Its main highlight is the three "Yaku-zaka" (misfortune slopes) leading to the main hall: the Women's Slope (33 steps), the Men's Slope (42 steps), and the Kanreki Slope (61 steps). Worshippers follow the custom of placing a coin on each step to shed their misfortune as they climb. Near the "Yugito" pagoda, the symbol of the grounds, you can look out over the scenic Hiwasa townscape, a truly superb view. It is also ideal for a weekend stroll, and the moment you step inside, you are enveloped in dignified air and feel your spirit purified. Nearby are the "Yakuoji Onsen" hot spring facility and a roadside station, so refreshing after worship is also well covered. Whether you pray quietly on a solo trip or enjoy the history and scenery with family and friends, it is a signature power spot of Tokushima.
