ABOUT

About this spot

Hiwasa Sea Turtle Museum Caretta, located on Ohama Beach in Minami Town, Tokushima Prefecture, is a museum dedicated to sea turtles, rare even worldwide. The name "Caretta" comes from the scientific name of the loggerhead sea turtle. The main highlight is the chance to observe sea turtles at various stages of growth up close. At the outdoor "artificial hatchery" and "rearing pools," you can meet baby turtles swimming hard and giant sea turtles over 100 years old drifting leisurely on the surface. The exhibition rooms inside explain in detail the evolution and ecology of sea turtles, as well as the precious history of their egg-laying, so adults and children alike can learn while having fun. Ohama Beach just in front is designated a national natural monument as a place where loggerhead turtles come to lay eggs every summer. Please visit on a weekend family trip or a solo trip to feel the mystery of life and the importance of nature.
