ABOUT
About this spot
Iyakei in Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture, is a vast gorge known as one of Japan's three great hidden regions. Deep, steep V-shaped cliffs continue, with the remarkably clear Iya River flowing below. Its greatest appeal is the richly expressive nature that changes with the seasons. In the autumn foliage season in particular, the entire mountainside is dyed in blazing reds and yellows, and the contrast with the blue of the river is breathtaking. The statue of the "Shonben Kozo" (Peeing Boy), standing on a rock jutting out from the cliff, is a famous photo spot created from the anecdote of local children once testing their courage there, and the view from it is spectacular. Around the area are the thrilling "Iya Kazura-bashi" woven from shirakuchikazura (a climbing vine), historic spots with legends of fugitive Heike clan warriors, and hot spring inns proud of their remote-feeling open-air baths. Leaving the bustle of the city behind, you can drive through the stunning scenery breathing clean air and reflect on history, enjoying a luxurious time that lets you forget everyday life, whether on a solo trip, a family trip, or a drive with friends.
