ABOUT

About this spot

Zenko-ji is one of Nagano's leading tourist attractions. Known as a non-denominational temple that belongs to no particular sect, it is a power spot that has drawn worshippers of all ages from across the country since ancient times. The main highlight is the huge main hall, designated a National Treasure. Walking the pitch-dark corridor beneath its floor in the "Okaidan Meguri" is a unique Zenko-ji experience, said to form a bond with the principal image when you touch the "lock to paradise" in the darkness. The "Oasaji" morning service held at sunrise, and the "Ojuzu Choudai" in which a monk touches your head with prayer beads, offer sacred moments that cleanse body and mind in a tranquil atmosphere. The approach is lined with the Nakamise shopping street, where hunting for local foods and souvenirs such as oyaki dumplings, Shinshu soba, and shichimi chili pepper is another pleasure. From a lively trip with friends to a quiet solo journey to settle the mind, or a three-generation family visit, the temple welcomes every style of traveler warmly. Why not take your time strolling and enjoy the historical atmosphere?
