ABOUT

About this spot

Matsushiro Castle, located in the southern part of Nagano City, is a historic castle ruin that grew out of Kaizu Castle, built by Takeda Shingen in preparation for his fight against Uesugi Kenshin. In the Edo period Sanada Nobuyuki entered the castle, and ten generations of the Sanada family ruled the area from then on. Today it has been developed as Matsushiro Castle Ruins Park, where you can see magnificent stone walls that retain their old appearance, as well as the Taiko Gate and North Fumei Gate, restored using traditional methods. The grounds are spacious, ideal for strolling leisurely at your own pace. Spring is an especially recommended season. About 100 Somei-Yoshino cherry trees are planted in the grounds, and the contrast between the historic gates and stone walls and the blossoms is breathtakingly beautiful. Historical spots such as the Sanada Residence, the Bunbu School, and the Zozan Underground Shelter are scattered around Matsushiro Castle, so you can immerse yourself in the romance of history all day. It is a great spot for history lovers, solo travelers who want to refresh in a quiet place, and families on a weekend walk. With free admission, it is a classic sightseeing spot to stop by when traveling in Shinshu.
