ABOUT

About this spot

Komoro Castle (Kaikoen) is a rare "sunken castle" built at a lower elevation than the castle town surrounding it. Said to have been laid out by Yamamoto Kansuke, military strategist to Takeda Shingen, its imposing "Third Gate," designated an Important Cultural Property, welcomes visitors into the world of history. Within the vast grounds, moss-covered stone walls that retain much of their original appearance continue on, and simply strolling here lets you feel a pleasant stillness and the breath of history. The cherry blossoms in spring and autumn foliage are especially spectacular, and it is a scenic spot among the best in Nagano Prefecture that draws large crowds. It has also been selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Castles, making it a must for history fans. The appeal of Kaikoen goes beyond history. It also has the Komoro City Zoo, the oldest in Nagano Prefecture, and a retro-style amusement park, so everyone from families with small children to adults seeking a quiet stroll can enjoy a full day here. Just a 3-minute walk from Komoro Station, it is also ideal as a stop during a Karuizawa trip. Enjoy a luxurious time where the rich nature and history of Shinshu come together.
