ABOUT
About this spot
Nestled at the foot of Mt. Togakushi, one of Nagano's famous peaks, Togakushi Shrine enshrines deities connected with the myth of the opening of the Heavenly Rock Cave, and is one of Japan's foremost sacred sites. Its greatest attraction is the roughly 2 km approach leading to Okusha. Passing through the Zuishinmon Gate at the midpoint, a row of cedar trees over 400 years old continues for about 500 meters. Its overwhelming scale and tranquil atmosphere invite visitors into a mystical world. Each of the five shrines holds different blessings, and the "Gosha Meguri" pilgrimage to all five is very popular with solo travelers and women traveling together who wish for better fortune and the purification of mind and body. Between visits, enjoy the abundant nature around you, and do not miss the local specialty, Togakushi soba. History, nature, and gourmet food all in one place make it a perfect spot for a weekend refresh. Spring greenery through autumn foliage is especially recommended, but the stillness of winter blanketed in snow has a special beauty of its own.
