ABOUT
About this spot
Standing around Lake Suwa in Nagano, Suwa Taisha is the head shrine of more than 10,000 Suwa shrines across Japan and counted among the oldest shrines in the country. Its most distinctive feature is its unique structure of two shrines and four sites: the Upper Shrine (Maemiya and Honmiya) on the south side of Lake Suwa and the Lower Shrine (Harumiya and Akimiya) on the north. A highlight is the "Onbashira," the pillars erected at the four corners of the shrine buildings, famous for the spirited Onbashira Festival held every seven years (by traditional count). The sight of giant trees hundreds of years old surrounding the sacred ground is overwhelming, and you can feel the power of faith that has continued since ancient times. The "Manji no Sekibutsu" stone Buddha near Harumiya of the Lower Shrine is also beloved by many visitors for its unique appearance. Completing the "Shisha Mairi" by visiting all four shrines and collecting goshuin stamps earns you a commemorative gift. Whether on a drive with friends, a family trip or a quiet solo walk through history, you will find a soul-cleansing time. Lake Suwa and the famous Kamisuwa Onsen are nearby, making this a great spot to combine sightseeing and relaxation.
