ABOUT
About this spot
Kamikochi in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, is one of Japan's finest mountain resorts, designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and a Special Natural Monument. Although it lies at an elevation of 1,500 meters, flat, well-maintained walking paths run along the Azusa River, so its greatest charm is that you can walk through great nature without serious mountaineering gear. The highlight of a stroll is the view from Kappa Bridge, the symbol of Kamikochi. The majestic Hotaka Mountain Range towering before you and the blue flow of the crystal-clear Azusa River make for a quintessential Japanese vista. There are also many sights, such as Taisho Pond, enchanting in the early morning mist, and Myojin Pond, with its mystical atmosphere. Fresh green in May, cool summer escapes, and vivid autumn foliage in October: each season brings a completely different delight. Being surrounded by the sound of pure water and birdsong, away from the bustle of the city, is sure to refresh body and mind. It is a sacred place recommended for trips with family and friends, and for those who want to face nature quietly alone.
